Engineering Office T.Niemelin also serves foreign customers who have summer houses or other estates in Finland. We will help you through new legislation when it comes to wastewater treatment in rural areas with no centralized sewerage system.

The Wastewater Decree (542/2003) came into force on 1st January 2004. The Decree sets minimum standards for wastewater treatment and also how the planning and construction has to be done.

New requirements

According to Decree, at least 90% of the organic material (BOD7) should be removed from wastewater and >85% of total phosphorus as well as >40% of total nitrogen with regard to the person equivalent load defined in the Decree. Municipalities have also the possibility to take local conditions into account and enforce slightly higher or lower standards in municipal environmental protection regulations where this is justifiable.

The requirements in the Decree apply immediately to all new buildings, while wastewater treatment systems of buildings completed before 1.1.2004 must in most cases be upgraded to fulfill the new standards by 1.1.2014.
